In most cases before obtaining a permit to build, plans must be submitted for review and approval. General information on this process is given under the links below.
Additions and remodels of a residential or commercial projects require a building permit. Counter plan checks may be conducted by plan check engineers in our field offices having jurisdiction if a residential project is limited to 600 square feet of remodel, meets conventional framing provisions as set forth by the prevailing Los Angeles County Building Code, and is classified as a small project by the Building Plan Check Engineer.
Small commercial remodels and limited tenant improvement projects may also be reviewed at the public counter.
Although it is our goal to review as many small projects over the counter; in order to serve all applicants efficiently, counter plan checks may not be conducted for projects when the anticipated review time by plan check engineers is in excess of 15 minutes.
