April 22, 2008 marked the 38th Anniversary of Earth Day! The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 when United States Senator Gaylord Nelson (Wisconsin) proposed that Americans stage nationwide demonstrations protesting the deterioration of the environment to force the issue onto the national agenda. Thanks to Senator Nelson, today, Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe!
This year, just like previous years, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works was among many in the WORLD celebrating Earth Day and raising awareness on the need to protect our environment. Throughout the entire month of April, Public Works attended more than 30 Earth Day events throughout Los Angeles County, promoting environmental awareness and providing educational materials to County residents. Major events included: the Universal Studios Hollywood Eco Fair, Earth Day at the Santa Monica Promenade, Los Angeles Convention Center Health and Fitness Expo, Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific Earth Day Celebration, Splash! Festival 2008 at UCLA’s Fowler Museum, Earth Day at the Environmental Charter Schools, and the 2008 Earth Day Expo at the Los Angeles Zoo.
One of the key events DPW attended this year was the Universal Studios Hollywood Eco Fair. The Eco Fair emphasizes the company’s ongoing “Green Is Universal” campaign which promotes and raises awareness of environmental issues. The event featured more than 30 organizations, celebrities, and interactive exhibits. DPW sponsored a booth at the Eco Fair as well as, a free mobile Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste Collection Event co-sponsored with the City of Los Angeles.
On April 30, Public Works hosted its 2nd annual Earth Day celebration Get Hip and Go Green, which was organized by Environmental Programs Division. The event was held at the DPW Headquarters, where outside organizations and participants throughout the Department provided valuable information and promotional materials on environmentally–conscious programs. While listening to the sounds of 104.3myFM, visitors received waste reduction tips, smart gardening facts, household hazardous waste collection information, and promotional items made from recycled content.
In an effort to promote alternatives to single–use plastic bags, those in attendance at the event received a free reusable “Brag About Your Bag” tote for grocery shopping. The DPW Headquarters Cafeteria celebrated by eliminating the use of plastic bags and stryofoam containers. Water Resources Division provided information on their role in operating and maintaining County dams, groundwater recharge facilities, and seawater barriers. Watershed Management showcased the Department’s regional, multi-benefit projects like Sun Valley Park, the Tujunga Wash Greenway, and the Dominguez Gap Wetlands–projects that include improvements in flood protection, water quality, water conservation, recreation and native–habitat.
For those interested in eco–friendly transportation, Longo Toyota displayed Hybrid vehicles and Administrative Service Division provided Rideshare Program information and educational materials.
