Using the food wasted in New York City
New York City implemented city-wide plan of curbside organic waste collection in 2013 and sends some of the collected food waste to the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Brooklyn for energy used to run the plant. The facility is partnering with National Grid to use the remaining biogas for pipeline injection. In addition, American Organic Energy receives 23,000 tons of food waste from Manhattan each year. The company currently composts the food waste and is building an anaerobic digester to convert food waste into biogas and fertilizer. Through this expansion, the facility will be able to process 1,000 tons of food waste a day. To read more, click here.

Canadian Firm Commercializes Low Temperature Thermal Hydrolysis
Cambridge, Ontario based Lystek International, which specializes in thermal hydrolysis solutions for biosolids and organics, has commercialized its first mobile thermal hydrolysis processing (THP) unit. The concept was conceived in response to growing market demand from smaller scale treatment plant operators for sustainable biosolids management solutions in support of the movement toward resource recovery. The mobile THP unit can allow biosolids generators to produce Class A biofertilizer and increase biogas production. To read more, click

Guest Editorial: Getting Serious about Implementing Integrated Waste Management
There is a serious need to develop a more robust integrated waste management that incorporates conversion technologies as part of the solid waste infrastructure in the US. The impact of the China Sword has accentuated a fundamental weakness in our existing solid waste management approach. However, using internationally proven policies and conversion technologies, the needed infrastructure can be built within a generation. To read more, click

Orlando Businesses Save Waste Fees Through Disney-Supported Biofuel
Businesses in Orlando, Florida, are saving dumpster fees by sending their food waste to a biofuel facility serving Walt Disney World. Businesses pay a lower fee to put organic waste in a green bin, which goes to an anaerobic digestion facility built by Harvest Power in Central Florida. The anaerobic digester currently processes 130,000 tons of food waste, biosolids, fats, oils, and grease annually. The city has committed to becoming a zero waste community that stops sending solid waste to landfills by 2040.
