Philly Refiner Plans $120M Plant to Convert Food Scraps to Fuel for Trucks and Buses
A renewable methane producer, RNG Energy Solutions, recently announced it has formed a joint venture with Philadelphia Energy Solutions, which operates the South Philadelphia refinery complex, to build a $120 million digester. The digester will be able convert more than 1,100 tons of commercial food waste per day into 3 million cubic feet of methane gas, which will be used as transportation fuel.  The Point Breeze Renewable Energy Project would take two to three years to permit and build.  To read more, click here.

Hennepin County Exploring Anaerobic Digestion for Organics
Hennepin County, MN is exploring the potential of processing organic waste through anaerobic digestion. The county is looking to process at least 25,000 tons of organic waste annually as part of its goal to recycle 75 percent of its waste and divert half of its organic waste going to landfills by the year 2030.  To read more, click here.

How to Reverse the Upward Trend of GHG Emissions in California
The California Air Resources Board announced that California recently achieved a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below the states 1990 levels, before the legislatively mandated deadline of 2020.  However, the transportation sectors carbon emissions have increased since 2013. The use of near-zero emission natural gas trucks using renewable natural gas produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste could offset this increase. To read more, click here.

Enerkem Produces a New Clean, Renewable Alternative Solution to Diesel Fuel for the Transportation Sector
Enerkem Inc. recently announced that it has successfully produced a renewable bio-dimethyl ether (DME) that can replace the use of diesel fuel in the transportation sector at its Innovation Centre in Westbury, Quebec.  The company uses thermochemical technology to produce fuel-grade DME from unrecoverable municipal solid waste.  To read more, click here.

111 Organizations Sign Letter Urging EPA to Process RIN Applications for Electricity Generated Using Biomass and Biogas Fuel
111 organizations sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler urging the immediate inclusion of renewable electricity in the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). In 2007, Congress approved the participation in the RFS of electricity produced using renewable feedstocks as fuel, including the biogenic portion of municipal solid waste, but the EPA has yet to register renewable electricity producers as part of the RFS program.
