In June 2003, the County conducted a waste tire collection event in the City of Compton at the Compton Airport. It rained during the event, but that didn't deter participants from bringing in their used tires. In the backdrop of planes flying overhead, workers at the event collected 672 passenger tire equivalents. Billboards helped direct customers to the event.
