Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
I would like to learn more about the recycling process in Los Angeles, from curb pickup to processed material.

Answer:
Hello,
Collecting and processing recyclable materials varies depending on the jurisdiction/city in which you live. In general, the waste hauler picks up the material from the curb in a designated residential recycling cart. That material is then transported to a materials recovery facility for further sorting into specific material types such as paper, cardboard, glass, or specific plastic resin types like Polyethylene. What material types the recovery facility decides to separate typically depends on the market for buying those material types and how contaminated they may be from the residents' carts. The separated material types are baled/compacted and transported to various re-manufacturing plants that will use the baled materials in place of or in addition to virgin materials.
