Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
I would like to test a back yard soil sample for pH balance, minerals, nutrients, etc. Who do I send soil samples to for testing?

Thank you for your help!

ANSWER:
There is no agency in the LA area that offers, or provides, soil testing services for residents. There are, however, soils labs in the LA area that can do pH, mineral analysis (N, P, K are the most common) and micro/macro nutrient analysis for a fee.

If your needs are for basic information on your soil, you can purchase home soil test kits relatively inexpensively and do the testing yourself. These kits are widely available on both the Internet and via special order from most home improvement stores, nurseries, etc. The Accugrow™ soil test kit is the most common and residents can easily perform a soil test and get immediate results. This kit includes test strips that measure pH, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; activating solution; a mixing vial and a soil scoop. The kit includes sufficient materials for 10 soil tests and a booklet is included that explains how to analyze test results, and how to correct common soil imbalances.
