Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
Where does our trash go? Is it disposed of in landfills?

Answer:
Household trash is typically taken to either a Materials Recovery Facility, Waste-to-Energy facility, or landfills. If taken to a Materials Recovery Facility, the recyclable materials are sorted out and then sent to a recycling facility. The residual trash is then taken either to a Waste-to-Energy facility where electricity is generated through the processing of trash, or to landfills for disposal. Landfills within Los Angeles County are regulated by Federal, State, and local agencies, to adequately provide for the regions trash disposal needs while protecting surrounding communities and the environment.
