Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
What are Unused Non-Controlled Medicines, as opposed to controlled medicines?

Answer:
Non-controlled substances are prescribed to treat medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and bacterial infections. Over-the-counter medicine, such as pain relievers, cold/flu remedies, and antiseptics, and veterinary medicines are also considered non-controlled substances.

For your convenience, non-controlled substances are accepted at our free weekly mobile Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronic Waste (E-Waste) Collection Events. Click on the link below to view a schedule of the County’s upcoming mobile collection events or call 1 (888) Clean-LA. In addition, the County has partnered with the City of Los Angeles to allow all residents of Los Angeles County to drop off HHW/E-Waste at 6 permanent collection centers in the communities of San Pedro, East Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, Playa del Rey, Glendale/Los Angeles, and Sun Valley. Click on the link below for the locations of the permanent collection centers or call 1 (800) 98-TOXIC.

It is illegal for household hazardous waste collection centers to collect “controlled substances”. These are drugs that have a potential for addiction and/or abuse such as narcotics and tranquilizers. Common controlled substances include codeine, phenobarbital, and anabolic steroids. For your convenience, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department offers a Safe Drug Drop Off program where both controlled and non-controlled substances are accepted at designated stations.
