2010 Results Are In!
Your help in responding to the 2010 survey made a difference. The information collected captured data from more than 97 percent of the state’s local streets and roads! This information was very useful in educating policymakers at all levels of government and helped prevent severe cuts to road funding. But there is more work to do.

The 2010 update shows that the condition of the local transportation system has deteriorated further. The statewide average pavement condition index (PCI) has deteriorated from 68 in 2008 to 66 (“at risk” category) in 2010.

Based on the 2010 information to bring the road system to a level where the taxpayer’s money can be spent cost effectively, we need approximately $56 billion of additional funding for pavements alone and a total of $79 billion for a functioning system over the next 10 years. This is $7.5 billion more than what was estimated in the 2008 study.

The 2010 results continue to be sobering. With the worsening pavement conditions and escalating costs, coupled with the existing funding climate, it is clear that California’s local streets and roads continue to be at risk. There is a clear downward trend that can be seen in the maps below.
