LED Highway Safety Light Replacement Program

Project Overview

The most widespread lighting technology for street lighting, including the highway safety lights (HSL) at signalized intersections is High Pressure Sodium (HPS). Today, highly efficient, energy-saving Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology can replace HPS with over 50% power saving efficiency and 5 times the lamp lifespan. In addition to the benefits of energy and maintenance savings, LED lighting gives a high-quality white light where the colors of objects like cars, clothing, and landscaping can be clearly observed, improving community aesthetics.

This program will install over 2,800 HSL in Unincorporated County Areas over a two year period. Once this lighting conversion effort is complete, 1,617,000 kWh of energy will be saved every year. This amount of energy savings is enough to power 235 California households every year.
