LA County Public Works is pleased to inform you of tunnel rehabilitation projects-on the Kanan Dume Road and Malibu Canyon Road tunnels-in Malibu. The projects, which are financed with County funds and State 1B Transportation Bond funds, will bring multiple benefits to Malibu commuters.
The $2 million Kanan Dume project, located near the unincorporated community of Latigo Canyon, began construction in June 2014 and was completed on time in January 2015. The interior lining of the tunnel was upgraded to provide vehicle safety and native, drought-tolerant plants were planted to improve aesthetics.
The $3 million Malibu Canyon Road project, which began in January 2015 and will continue for approximately eight months, includes improvements to the tunnel's interior lining and roadway repair to enhance driver comfort and vehicle safety. The project will also bring water quality benefits with the construction of a vegetated swale, which will filter pollutants from storm water and help replenish groundwater supplies. The tunnel will be closed for construction from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Sunday evening through Friday morning. It will remain open at all other times. Nighttime traffic will be detoured onto Kanan Dume Road and Topanga Canyon Boulevard. Emergency vehicles will be allowed access during construction.
