Sediment Management Strategic Plan

The Los Angeles County Public Works Department has extended the period for public comment on its Sediment Management Strategic Plan to August 28, 2012.

The development of the Plan has been a collaborative effort with numerous stakeholders and the County is extending the review period to provide ample additional opportunity for all stakeholders to review the document.

The Plan provides a broad overview of the challenges of regional sediment management and identifies alternatives for managing an estimated 67 million cubic yards of sediment from District facilities.  It was developed over an eighteen-month period with the help of an Advisory Working Group and a Stakeholder Task Force comprised of residents, regulatory agencies, environmental groups, business leaders, and municipalities.

Effective management of the sediment within the District’s dams and debris basins helps reduce the flood risk to downstream communities and increases Public Works’ ability to capture stormwater as a source for local drinking water supplies.

County Public Works Director Gail Farber said that by visiting LASedimentManagement.com the public can examine the numerous alternatives for the removal, transportation, use, and/or placement of sediment from debris basins and reservoirs under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County Flood Control District.

“We encourage the public to visit the website, learn about the flood control and stormwater capture system and offer their comments on the Plan,” Farber said.
