Anaergia Secures $117M Funding For North Americas Largest Food Waste Facility
Ontario headquartered waste and resources firm, Anaergia, has raised $117 million for its planned Rialto Bioenergy Facility in Carlsbad, California.  According to Anaergia, once fully operational, the plant will be the largest food waste digester facility in North America, converting 700 tons per day of food waste and 300 tons per day of biosolids into renewable natural gas, renewable electricity, and Class A organic fertilizer.  The plant is expected to begin operations in the third quarter of 2020. BTA International Completes Organic Waste to Biogas Plant in Quebec
BTA International GmbH, a specialist for the wet-mechanical pre-treatment and subsequent digestion of organic waste containing impurities, have completed a facility in Varennes, Quebec that will convert residential and commercial organic waste into biogas. The plant has a capacity of 40,000 metric tons per year. To read more, click here.

Organization Transforms Trash into Fuel Using Utahs First Food Waste Digester
A renewable biomethane power plant in Utah will soon be able to capture renewable energy from food waste utilizing anaerobic digestion.  The amount of methane captured will be equivalent to taking more than 75,000 cars off the highway annually.  The plant is expected to become fully operational in May and will process between 500 and 700 tons of food waste per day. Nova Scotia Moves to Allow Thermal Disposal of Plastic, Newsprint
Nova Scotia is changing its solid waste regulations to allow plastic, cardboard and newsprint to be processed in advanced thermal conversion plants. Nova Waste Solutions, Inc. is working to develop an advanced thermal conversion facility in Nova Scotia that aims to use plasma gasification to convert waste into energy. Halifax-based Sustane Technologies, Inc. received environmental approval and federal funding for to develop a facility in Nova Scotia to convert municipal garbage into biomass pellets, diesel, and kerosene. POLICY & LEGISLATION 

Senate Bill 1383 Formal Rulemaking Begins
The formal 45-day public comment period on the Senate Bill 1383 regulations began on January 18, 2019. SB 1383 requires California to reduce organic waste disposal 50 percent below 2014 levels by 2020 and 75 percent by 2025. CalRecycle will accept written comments until the comment period closes on March 4, 2019 at 5 p.m. A public hearing to receive public comments is scheduled on March 12, 2019 at 9 a.m. in Sacramento. David Hochschild Appointed as New Chair of the California Energy Commission
California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed former solar energy executive David Hochschild as the new chair of the California Energy Commission. Newsom also appointed Janea Scott, deputy counselor for renewable energy and special assistant to the counselor at the U.S. Department of the Interior, as the vice chair. To read more, click here.

Court of Appeals Rules in Favor of Californias Low Carbon Fuel Standard
In California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a decisive ruling upholding Californias Low Carbon Fuel Standard - the states landmark program to reduce climate pollution from the fuel used in cars and trucks.  The court sided with California on all issues in the case, dismissed challenges to the Low Carbon Fuel Standard on numerous grounds, and awarded attorneys fees to the state.  To read more, click here.

RFS Power Coalition Launches To Secure Role For Electricity Producers In The Renewable Fuel Standard
Three trade associations representing renewable electricity producers announced the launch of the RFS Power Coalition. The coalitions purpose is to get the EPA to implement a law passed by Congress in 2007 which mandates the inclusion of qualifying renewable electricity in the Renewable Fuel Standard. Food waste recycling infrastructure producing electricity would benefit from the implementation of this law. To read more, click here.


GRANT OPPORTUNITY

Krogers Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Innovation Fund is putting out $1 million in grants for ideas in food waste prevention, food recovery, and food waste recycling. Awards will range from $25,000-$250,000. They will accept Letters of Intent from February 4th to March 4th and, after reviewing the letters, they will select a group to submit full applications by March 29th. Grant recipients will be notified of their awards in May. To apply, click here.
