With so many billions of bags being consumed each year, addressing the issue of plastic bag litter may seem like a daunting task. The good news is that single use plastic bag litter is caused by individual actions, and individual actions can and will make a huge difference in stemming the tide of single use plastic bag litter. Below are some simple but important things you can do to protect our environment:
Use reusable bags whenever and wherever you shop. Keep one or two in your car to make it easy.
Urge your friends and family to get into the reusable habit.
The third Thursday of December, each year, is “A Day Without a Bag” throughout Los Angeles County; and shoppers are urged to forgo single use carryout bags in favor of reusable bags.
Avoid getting more bags then you need, and make sure to dispose of your bags properly.

Working Group Meetings
The County Working Group develops and implements the voluntary Program, with support from the three following subcommittees that meet on a monthly basis.
Store Operations Subcommittee
The Store Operations Subcommittee is responsible for developing methods to enhance store personnel training, at-store recycling of plastic bags, and usage of reusable carryout bags. It will develop guidelines for stores in offering incentives to reduce consumption of single use bags, and encourage stores to participate in reusable bag promotions and other outreach efforts.
Public Education Subcommittee
The Public Education Subcommittee is responsible for implementing an awards program to recognize stores that have demonstrated commendable levels of Program participation. It will also develop reusable bag giveaway events, and collaborate with cities to create a countywide anti-litter campaign. It will also develop educational materials to promote reusable bags and at-store recycling of plastic carryout bags.
Technical Advisory Subcommittee
The Technical Advisory Subcommittee is responsible for providing technical assistance on methods to implement at-store recycling operations and to develop Program performance measurements. It will provide data on plastic bag consumption and at-store recycling; establish litter prevention programs; and further develop the Disposal Reduction Rate methodology. It will also coordinate with the State and other agencies to expand the recycling market infrastructure, and develop methods to increase the recycled content of paper carryout bags (minimum 40%).
