Single-Use Bag Reduction and Recycling Program

Interesting Facts & Figures

  • According to the California Integrated Waste Management Board, single use plastic bags make up 0.4 percent of the overall landfill disposal waste stream - equivalent to 45,000 tons per year Countywide.

  • Each year, 6 billion single use plastic carryout bags are consumed in the County of Los Angeles.

  • Single use plastic bags contribute significantly to the County's litter problem.  Due to the lightweight nature of single use plastic bags, wind easily carries bags, causing them to become entangled in trees and scattered along roads.

  • Only 5 percent of single use plastic carryout bags are currently recycled with current infrastructure due to the following factors:
    • Single use plastic carryout bags usually have a high contamination rate.

    • Single use plastic carryout bags have a tendency to jam the screens used to separate materials.

    • It is not cost-efficient to recycle single use plastic carryout bags due to lack of suitable markets, with a limited domestic market.*
