About Sediment Management and Flood Control District
For nearly 100 years, the Los Angeles County Flood Control District (District) has provided flood risk management and water conservation for much of Los Angeles County.
The District manages a flood control system of dams, debris basins, and other drainage infrastructure, which reduces risk of floods and debris flows for downstream communities. Effective sediment management requires the regular removal of sediment that deposits within District facilities.
What We Do
What is Sediment Management
Learn more about what sediment management is and how it affects you and the County of Los Angeles.
Strategic Plan
The Strategic Plan will address long-term sediment management needs while taking environmental and social impacts into account, in addition to cost.
Sediment Removal Projects
Several dams have been impacted by sediment and require immediate action. The removal projects will restore flood capacity and maximize water conservation.

Sediment Removal Projects
The 2009 Station Fire was the largest fire in the Los Angeles County recorded history and burned over 160,000 acres before containment. Generally, it takes five years or more for a watershed to recover from a wildfire. Heavy sedimentation from the denuded ground surface is expected to accumulate in the Los Angeles County Flood Control District’s reservoirs during the recovery period which will reduce the reservoirs’ storage capacity and potentially cover and/or damage dam outlet works critical for flood control. Several of the District’s reservoirs have been impacted by this sedimentation and require immediate attention. Over the next several years, the District will strive to maintain operations by removing sediment from the reservoirs. This will restore flood capacity and full operability of the outlet works as well as maximize water conservation efforts.
