The essential systems of twenty-two buildings at Rancho Los Amigos were noncompliant and required structural and nonstructural retrofit. Design is underway, and this first phase of nonstructural work is scheduled to be completed before January 1, 2002.
Fifteen buildings will be structurally noncompliant by January 1, 2008. The Plan recommends replacing the existing noncompliant Kitchen Building, relocating the Clinical Laboratory from the noncompliant Harriman Building into a new building, and relocating the Inpatient Pharmacy from the existing noncompliant Building 500 into the retrofitted Building 100. The remaining structurally noncompliant buildings are recommended to be retrofitted. The Old Central Plant that feeds the existing Kitchen Building will not require retrofit and can be delicensed. Six buildings will be nonstructurally noncompliant. The Plan recommends nonstructural retrofit of only three of these buildings since the Harriman Building, Building 500, and the Old Central Plant will be delicensed as hospital buildings.
As of December, 2001, Public Works was instructed to suspend all retrofit design work at Rancho Los Amigos. The Board, in January 2003, recommended closing the hospital as an acute care facility but final decision on closure will be made after a public hearing.
