Open Pacific Coast Study FIRM Revision (2020-2021)

FEMA is revising the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for unincorporated areas and the cities along the coast of Los Angeles County. The purpose of the maps is to more accurately identify Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) in these communities.

FEMA prepared 69 Preliminary FIRMs in 2016. FEMA has finalized these maps and has sent Letters of Final Determination to the officials of the County of Los Angeles and the Cities of El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, and Torrance.

The new FIRMS will become effective for insurance purposes 6 months from the date of FEMA’s Letters of Final Determination. The New FIRMs are anticipated to become effective in April 2021.

Residents in the cities are advised to contact their cities’ floodplain managers for information specific to their areas.
