Welcome to the Intelligent Transportation System Site

To help in the on-going effort to improve mobility on our congested local highways and streets, the Department of Public Works (DPW) began administering numerous multi-jurisdictional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) projects.

Click on the links to the left to learn more about individual ITS projects administered by DPW.

The technologies deployed under these ITS projects will enable DPW staff to monitor and control traffic signal operations from a remote location on a real time basis. Staff will receive immediate notification of signal malfunctions resulting in more efficient maintenance responses. Using roadway sensors and closed circuit television cameras to monitor traffic conditions, staff will be able to better manage congestion caused by incidents and special events. These ITS technologies may also include providing motorists with both pre-trip and en route information on roadway traffic conditions through devices such as Changeable Message Signs, Highway Advisory Radio, and the Internet. All of these functions will be coordinated through the County of Los Angeles Traffic Management Center (TMC) currently under construction at DPW's Headquarters located in Alhambra, California. The County TMC will house the staff responsible for the monitoring and control of traffic signals and serve as the central clearinghouse for the collection, storage and dissemination of traffic data.

Recognizing the need to make travel seamless along highways which run through multiple cities, DPW has been working with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the State of California Department of Transportation, the City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation, and numerous other cities to exchange traffic signal and real-time congestion information with each other. The result of this effort is the development of the Information Exchange Network (IEN) which will enable all agencies in the County to implement coordinated traffic management responses to congestion caused by incidents and special events.
