About ITS
To help in the on-going effort to improve mobility on our congested local highways and streets, Los Angeles County Public Works (PW) began administering numerous multi-jurisdictional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) projects.
The technologies deployed under these ITS projects will enable PW staff to monitor and control traffic signal operations from a remote location on a real time basis. Staff will receive immediate notification of signal malfunctions resulting in more efficient maintenance responses. Using roadway sensors and closed circuit television cameras to monitor traffic conditions, staff will be able to better manage congestion caused by incidents and special events. These ITS technologies also include providing motorists with both pre-trip and en route information on roadway traffic conditions through devices such as cell phones, Changeable Message Signs, and the Internet. All of these functions are coordinated through the County of Los Angeles Traffic Management Center (TMC) at PW’s Headquarters in Alhambra, California.
Our Projects
Kimley-Horn Integrated Transportation System
The Kimley-Horn Integrated Transportation System (KITS) is a commercial off the shelf traffic control system purchased by Los Angeles County Public Works (PW) in 2004.
Information Exchange Network
In 1999, TransCore was selected by PW to establish a coordinated network for sharing information and control of the various traffic control systems throughout LA County using a common network backbone based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA).
ITS Corridor Projects
The I-5/Telegraph Road Corridor is an LA County ITS project, which will result in arterial infrastructure improvements along Telegraph Road in the Gateway Cities Forum. The I-5/Telegraph Road Corridor consists of 277 intersections in 10 different jurisdictions, comprising 8 cities, the County and Caltrans.
Traveler Information System
The El Segundo Area ITS Project is a unique collaboration between public agencies and private partners for implementation of a multi-jurisdictional Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS)/ Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS)/ Traveler Information Center (TIC) for the El Segundo Area.
