A gala celebration was held on March 4, 2000 to commemorate the grand
opening of the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens in Cypress Park.
The former Lawry's California Center facility has been beautifully
restored by the SMMC/MRCA to become a central gathering place for
everyone with an interest in the Los Angeles River. The River Center
boasts a museum with a dramatic water feature devoted to educating
the public about the Los Angeles River. One building houses a computer
training and educational facility for use by nearby residents.
Office spaces at the River Center are occupied by the MRCA, North East
Trees, Friends of the Los Angeles River, National Park Service, and the
Clean and Green Program. Future plans for the River Center call for
a bike trail staging area and a connection with the proposed Arroyo
Seco and Los Angeles River bike trails. The River Center and Gardens
is located in Cypress Park.
