The Building Official will review permitted work for compliance with the requirements of the Building Code, the approved plan and specifications, and that the work matches the permit’s scope of work. Generally, all work will need to be inspected before being covered over. A project is complete once the permitted work has passed final inspection.

General Inspections

STEP 1
When a permit is issued, an inspection record card may be provided to the permit holder to post at the jobsite. The inspection record card is for the Building Official to make the required entries regarding the inspection(s).

STEP 2
When the permitted work reaches a certain phase of construction the permit holder is required to request for inspection online through EPIC-LA (for projects in the unincorporated County areas) or call the local Building and Safety District Office (for projects within Contract Cities) that issued the permit to have an inspector review the work. The permit holder is responsible to maintain the work accessible and exposed for inspection.

STEP 3
The inspector checks to see if the work matches the approved plan(s), permit description(s), and meets the requirements of the building code(s). The inspection ends with either a list of corrections or an approval to continue to the next phase of construction or a final of the permit(s). When provided, the inspection record card will be signed and dated.

The number of required inspections depends on the complexity of the job. The inspection record card will indicate at which phase of construction an inspection is required.

STEP 5
When the work covered by the permit(s) has passed final inspection the inspector will sign off the inspection record card and final the permit(s).

For buildings and structures, a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued by the Building Official.

Why do I need an inspection?
All construction or work for which a permit is required shall be subject to inspection by the Building Official and shall remain accessible and exposed for inspection purposes until approved by the Building Official. Plans and specifications, permits, and when provided the inspection record card shall be available at the job site. It shall be the duty of the permit holder to cause the work to remain accessible and exposed for inspection purposes. Neither the Building Official nor the jurisdiction shall be liable for expense entailed in the removal or replacement of any material required to allow inspection.
How do I schedule an inspection?
To schedule an inspection related to permit(s) in the unincorporated County areas, the permit holder is required to log into their EPIC-LA account, select the permit(s) associated to the permitted work, and request for an inspection online. You will receive a confirmation email once your request is confirmed by an inspector.
For permits within Contract Cities, call the local Building and Safety District Office that issued the permit to schedule an inspection. When you call, please provide the following information:
- Address of the site where the inspection will occur.
- The type of inspection needed.
- If available, the permit number is in the upper right corner of the permit.
- A contact name and phone number.
The permit holder is responsible to maintain the work accessible and exposed for inspection. All inspection requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Inspections are only performed during regular working hours.

Additionally, for buildings and structures, a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued by the Building Official.
When are Continuous or Periodic Special Inspection(s) required?
All construction or work for which a building permit is required shall be subject to inspection by the Building Official and certain types of construction shall have continuous or periodic "Special Inspection" as specified in Chapter 17 of the County of Los Angeles Building Code (Title 26).
