Santa Clara River Watershed FIRM Revision (2019-2021)

FEMA has revised the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for unincorporated areas and the City of Santa Clarita in the Santa Clara River watershed. The purpose of the maps is to more accurately identify Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) in these communities.

FEMA prepared 36 Preliminary FIRMs in 2015 and revised 11 of them in 2019. FEMA has finalized these maps and has sent Letters of Final Determination to the officials of the County of Los Angeles and the City of Santa Clarita. Some of the FIRMs happen to cover areas of the Cities of Los Angeles and San Fernando, so although there are no changes in flood zones in them, Letters of Final Determination were also sent to the cities’ officials.

The new FIRMS will become effective for insurance purposes 6 months from the date of FEMA’s Letters of Final Determination. The New FIRMs are anticipated to become effective on June 2, 2021. For structures that are newly mapped into a SFHA, it is best to contact your insurance agent as soon as possible, especially before June 2021, to obtain the best flood insurance rate.
