GMED is comprised of the geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, and materials engineering disciplines. The Division performs many functions including:
- Conducting the review of geologic and soils reports for verification of compliance with the Los Angeles County Building Code for contract cities and the unincorporated areas of the County.
- Ensuring compliance with the State Seismic Hazards Mapping and Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zones Acts.
- Establishing and implementing policy from a geotechnical standpoint.
- Determining the required structural section of roadways in new subdivisions.
- Assisting Building and Safety Division to assess building site stability following emergency events.
